At Layer Forge Studio, the journey to create the perfect miniature base began as both an engineering challenge and a creative mission. The goal was simple but ambitious — to use 3D printing to manufacture every component within the tabletop wargaming niche. From miniatures to terrain and bases, we wanted to build everything in-house and bring modern fabrication into the hobby space.

🧪 Resin: The Beautiful Struggle

Resin printing quickly proved ideal for miniatures. It captured every detail — from armor plates to facial expressions — with stunning precision. But when it came to bases, the excitement faded. Printing them in resin was time-consuming, messy, and inefficient. Supports scarred the cosmetic surface, cleanup took forever, and large bases often warped or cracked. Resin was perfect for characters, but it wasn’t built for production-scale base manufacturing.

🧰 Turning to FDM: The Underdog Approach

That realization led me to FDM printing — a method I had initially written off as too crude for small, detailed work. FDM came with its own quirks: Z-seams, retraction marks, and visible layer lines that were especially noticeable on small circular bases. But instead of accepting those flaws, I saw an opportunity to solve them through process engineering.

🔬 Engineering the Solution

I treated the problem like a scientific experiment — testing new temperatures, tweaking retraction settings, and adjusting layer orientations for weeks on end. Every print was measured, analyzed, and refined. Little by little, I reduced artifacts until the surface was smooth, the edges were clean, and the bases looked nearly as polished as commercial products.

After countless trials, the breakthrough finally came. FDM printing delivered everything we needed — strength, scalability, and a smooth finish — without the mess or waste of resin. It became the hero of the story, proving that innovation doesn’t come from expensive machines, but from persistence and precision.
